Coach Byers is a good cross country coach with over twenty years of coaching experience. I came to him as a transfer student, and he embraced me and helped me adjust to the team. Coach Byers is a fun coach who knows when to be serious and when to lighten up. He responds to the needs of the team and I never doubted that he cared for me as an athlete, a student, and as a person. My XC times from my previous college should have made me one of the top 3 runners on the team when I transferred. However, my performances never lived up to those times, and I struggled to crack the top 7 on the team many times. Despite my disappointing performances, Coach Byers was patient with me, always reminding me that he believed in me and never making me feel like I couldn't yet improve. Byers' belief in me paid off in my second and final XC season with the school, where I was our #4 runner, helping the team to our first conference championship in about 5 years.
