Longwood University was founded in 1839 in Farmville, Virginia. It is a public liberal arts school and is the third-oldest public university in Virginia. It is also one of the hundred oldest higher education schools in the U.S. 

The three undergraduate academic colleges that they have are:

  • Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences the College of Business and Economics
  • College of Education and Human Services—supported by the Cormier Honors 
  • College College of Graduate and Professional Studies-serves 5,096.

University's 14 varsity athletics programs, known as the Lancers, compete at the NCAA DI Level. Thirteen of those teams compete in the Big South Conference, while field hockey is a Mid-American Conference member.

The same admissions process is used for athletes and non-athletes applying to Longwood.

What are the qualities you look for when taking on a student-athlete?

The good academic student to contribute both in the classroom and playing field. Someone ready and excited to experience all that Longwood has to offer.

What will set a student-athlete's application apart from the general applicants or other student-athletes?

In addition to course selection and grades, applicants can submit a personal statement to share how they can contribute to campus as a student.

Does an early admission application carry more weight/have a different priority in your acceptance process?

Same criteria used to evaluate Early Action (non-binding) and Regular Admission applicants. The Early Action application deadline is December 1, and notification is mailed by mid-February for entering the fall term. For Regular Admission, application and academic documents must be received/postmarked by February 1 (fall term) or November 1 ( term).

Would your institution recommend that a student-athlete come in for an interview? If so, when would you recommend they start this process?

An interview is not required for the application process.

What GPA/SAT/ACT would your institution recommend that a student-athlete shoot for?

GPA and SAT midranges for all accepted students:

Midrange GPA: 3.08-3.79

Midrange SAT: 1010-1160

Midrange ACT: 19-25

* Some students were admitted with GPA and SATs above and below the midranges. In addition to cumulative GPA and test scores (e.g., SAT or ACT), class rank (if available), consistency and trend in grades, and course selection impact the evaluation process.

What is the best way for student-athletes to start the financial aid process if they need financial aid? 

Students can fill out the FAFSA starting Oct 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The deadline for completion is March 1 for fall enrollment.

What is your institution's policy on financial aid? Does it differ for scholar-athletes?

Longwood is committed to helping students afford an education. Financial assistance is available based on submitting the Free Application For Federal Student Aid, FAFSA. Students can possibly receive a financial package including grants, loans & .

What is the best piece of advice you can give to a student-athlete who has your institution number one on their list?

Visit the campus. In addition to talking with coaches, talk with the general student body about their academic and experiences.
