Transferring is usually a sticky situation; it creates a feeling of uncertainty that some athletes thrive off of while others get sick to the thought of. While transferring is scary, it is often necessary in order for athletic or academic goals to be met. Here are some important factors to help you realize when it may be time to transfer: 

  1. You are not getting the you would like 

Playing time is a common reason people decide it's time to transfer. After having a discussion with your coach about why you aren't playing, you may decide that it is time for a new journey somewhere you may get the playing time you want. An important consideration is that going in the portal doesn't guarantee playing time, but it could give you a greater chance compared to the current situation, and a chance to start fresh.

  1. You've outgrown your school academically

Another reason to consider transferring is . Going into a university with credits from high school could set you up to graduate early or have redshirt years, but some schools don't have the programs necessary to accommodate you for your whole athletic career. While you have been loyal to your school throughout your undergraduate years, sometimes it is necessary to transfer in order to continue your education and get a degree that will set you up for your future career.

  1. The school is too far from home 

A lot of high school students getting recruited and deciding on colleges often think “I want to get as far away from home as possible.” While some people have a great experience doing this, others do not. The homesickness that results is another reason to decide to transfer, and it  could have nothing to do with a school or sports program.

  1. You're losing love for the sport 

An important consideration that is often overlooked is that the sport you're playing is supposed to be fun. You should not dread going to practice or a game. While in a moment you may think, “I don't want to be here right now; I have so much to do,” that shouldn't be a thought you have every single time you have your sport. If it is, transferring might be something to consider, a new program could give you a break and a new outlook on your sport, and help you fall back in love with it.

Overall, the decision to transfer shouldn't be taken lightly. There are many pros and cons that go into transferring and your reasons for transfering are unique to your situation. Most college athletes only get four years left of their sport until they are put into the real world, so making the most of those four years is extremely important in whatever way you see necessary.
