Sometimes, as athletes, we focus on the big picture and ignore the basic advice. Today, the basic advice I offer is to drink water. Hydration plays an important role in both our mental and physical health.
Student-athletes undertake a great amount of stress in their sport as well as in the classroom. This means we often forget to take care of ourselves while trying to balance these responsibilities. However, when something as important as hydration is lacking, it is even more difficult to bear these responsibilities.

Hydration plays a vital role in brain function as well as physical output as a person who's hydrated will have improved circulation of nutrients and oxygen in the body. These improved bodily functions can go a long way for athletes who rely on their body to perform optimally.

On the court, hydration can reduce the risk of cramps and injuries during intense exercise. Furthermore, drinking plenty of water will improve muscle function and rid muscles of excess metabolic waste, making you less sore (sign me up!). The nutrients and oxygen that come with improved circulation from hydration will also aid in recovery after workouts. Student-athletes should all do themselves a favor and raise a glass.
